Nutrition

Students of Tao learned many lessons by simply observing the world around them. By doing this they recognized what our bodies need to stay healthy, active, strong, and weather the changes that happen with aging. They discovered like many other life lessons, that simplicity is best. The ancients did not have processed foods, chemical additives, or other non-natural ingredients in the food they ate, so why should we? Studies have shown that additives such as MSG (and the over 200 names for it!), hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, and soy are not healthy for us. It is best to eat foods that come from the earth, preferably in their most natural form. The less processed a food, the more of the health benefits it retains, and the more benefit we get when we eat it.

Meditation

To be truely healthy, one needs not only a healthy body, but a healthy mind and spirit as well. Meditation can be a trememdous tool in helping you acheive and maintain a sense of calm, and an overall positive attitude. Studies have shown that when people meditate regularly, physical changes actually occur within the body and the mind. Memory impoves, you are less likely to have mood swings, and you can even decrease your blood pressure. There are many ways to meditate, some include movement, and others require you to be still. Some focus on breath, and others on rituals. It is always a good idea to try out each style to find out which style fits you best. But no matter which stle you choose, for optimum benefit, do it regularly and for at least 10-20 minutes each session.

Exercise

With so many forms of exercise available to us today, it is no wonder some people loose motivation before they even embark on the journey to physical health. Let us remember that before there was such things as elipticals and weight machines, there was nature. Students of Tao got exercise by using their bodies and their physical surroundings to help them acheive physical fitness. We only need to look as far as our children to learn the lessons we need to help improve the health of our bodies. Movement should be joyful, and feel good. It should make us WANT to move again! Physical activities such as walking, yoga, tai chi, dancing, swimming, and physical labor are all great activities for our bodies. They don't tax the joints, and they add a sense of rhythm and focus to our activity. And of course, big payoff is the benefits we notice in our bodies themselves...we feel better, and we look better!
